Keto Dieting with APOE | High Cholesterol due to Genetic Mutation – Thomas DeLauer

This video is not for everybody, let me be totally clear on that. It’s actually quite a niche video, but it’s one that’s been requested a lot and one that is really important. Because if you are someone that has this specific genetic factor, it’s very, very important that you know how you should alter your diet in general.

So APOE4. It’s the most important genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, but it’s also … has a lot of other pieces. The reason it’s such a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, is it affects the oxidation of a lot of these healthy fats.

It affects the oxidation of docosahexaenoic acid. Okay? So when we’re looking at different kinds of Omega-3s, we’ve got DHA, right? It makes it so we oxidize so much DHA, it doesn’t get into the brain. Which means we don’t get the neuroprotective effects, so it can cause Alzheimer’s to rear its ugly head a lot easier.

It’s also kind of a codes for a mutant lipid protein. So basically it alters your lipid metabolism. It makes it so that if you have this, you don’t process fats the same way. Which means the ketogenic diet gets really sketchy, because you’re mainly eating fats, right? So what do we do?

Olive oil, douse it. Okay. Olive oil … the whole purpose of eating in my opinion is to be able to consume olive oil. I love olive oil. It good stuff. High monounsaturated fatty acid content, plus it’s been shown to lower oxidized LDL. So we get the monounsaturated fatty acids that the body can process if you have APOE4, and you also get the benefit of reducing oxidized LDL.

Fatty fish. High levels of DHA. You need to be eating whole source … whole food sources, excuse me, of fatty fish. So sardines, anchovies, mackerel, all that stuff because they’re DHA that’s combined with phosphatidylcholine. Phosphatidylcholine makes it so that the DHA is more bioavailable and gets into your brain. If you have this, you oxidize the DHA, which means you need a lot more than other people do.

Okay. Things to avoid entirely. I hate to say it, because I like a lot of dairy foods on keto, but if you have this APOE4, you should limit dairy. Dairy fats, although can be good for fat loss and believe it or not, good for heart disease, are linked to oxidized cholesterol. Not that big of a deal if you don’t have the APOE4. But if you do have this genetic mutation, this becomes an issue. You should limit dairy.

Now let’s talk some supplements for a minute that’ll help you out with this. Resveratrol. Okay, well, we could break it down, there’s a lot of better ways to skin a cat than just resveratrol.

But for all intents and simple purposes, and for being cost effective, 250 milligrams of resveratrol can help reduce oxidized LDL in APOE4 individuals. Also, get vitamin K2 in the MK7 form, it has a better half-life. So it makes it so you could actually utilize minerals in your body, getting into the bones, which ultimately can affect this whole system.
